Forty Nine Hudson

Forty Nine Hudson emerged from Salt Lake City in the mid‑1990s as a tight-knit trio—John Burdick (guitar/vocals), Daron Gardner (bass), and Chris Purdie (drums)—blending melodic indie rock with the introspective depth of emo and the atmospheric textures of post‑rock. Their debut (and sole) album, For Weeks at a Time, was recorded in September 1997 and released in late 1997/early 1998 on the Music Fellowship label. The album is marked by layered acoustic guitars, dynamic crescendos, and textured soundscapes enriched with cello and piano. Songs such as “Hideout” and “Unseen But Felt” showcase the band’s range—from intimate emotional core to epic sonic explorations.

Critics and listeners praised its immersive production, the use of natural tape hiss, and genre-melding that created a hauntingly emotional listening experience. Though the band opted not to produce further albums, For Weeks at a Time remains a hidden gem in the late‑90s indie/post‑rock echosphere. Its tracks are still available today across Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube—preserving the quieter, emotive spirit of a band that made their mark in a brief, poignant moment in underground music.
